Marketing and Communications Specialist

The Salt City Market, in conjunction with the Allyn Family Foundation, is seeking a Marketing and Communications Specialist to co-design, manage and execute a comprehensive communications strategy for both entities.

 

 

Overview of the Allyn Family Foundation and the Salt City Market:

The Allyn Family Foundation (AFF) was established in 1954 with initial contributions from members of the Allyn family who owned the Welch Allyn Company. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Central New York through strategic philanthropy. This strategic philanthropy necessitates setting long-term goals, diligent monitoring and assessment, and requires not only capital, but vision, expertise and a long-term horizon.

 

Today the AFF focuses on three core areas: Economic Opportunity and Empowerment, Early Childhood, and Women’s Health.  Within the realm of Economic Opportunity and Empowerment, in 2018 the AFF embarked on a major community economic development project, now known as the Salt City Market, as an intentional strategy in our city to foster opportunity in support of a vibrant, prosperous and inclusive community for all.

 

The Salt City Market will be an 80,000 square foot building, located at 484 S. Salina Street, in Syracuse New York. This location was selected after much thought, research, and community engagement, to ensure that the market would be located at the intersection of multiple communities; all in great need of better access to economic opportunities as well as quality, healthy foods. The market will sit at a 5-way intersection where the downtown, near west side, and south side communities connect. It is also at the intersection where the city’s bus transportation hub sits.

 

The upper stories of the building will have 26 mixed-income apartments as well as not-for-profit office space, including the AFF.  The ground floor of the Salt City Market will be a 24,000 square foot food hall and public Market.  Unlike most food halls, the Salt City Market is a not-for-profit intentionally geared toward first-time business owners who have traditionally not had access to economic opportunities.  The Salt City Market will feature 10 food incubator stalls for burgeoning food entrepreneurs of which at least 70% will be women and minority-owned businesses, including a high percentage of New Americans.  Its primary role is threefold: to celebrate food and culture; build up food entrepreneurs from communities across Syracuse; and serve as a crossroads and agora for our entire city.

 

 

Summary of the Position:

The Marketing and Communications Specialist will help both the Allyn Family Foundation and the Salt City Market tell their story and expand their public reach within Central New York.  This will mean working with AFF staff and Salt City Market staff to learn about the different aspects of their respective projects and find ways to share those with the broader public through multi-faceted marketing strategies. 

 

The Marketing and Communications Specialist will function within both the AFF and the Salt City Market and will report directly to the Director of Community Prosperity at the Allyn Family Foundation

 

DUTIES FOR SALT CITY MARKET          
  • Work with the Salt City Market Manager to design a marketing strategy for Q2-Q4, 2020 that utilizes a broad, cost-effective range of platforms to grow market awareness among diverse, target market segments.

  • Identify, pursue and shepherd to completion local, regional and national earned media opportunities for the market and its tenants

  • Oversee a daily social media stream across Facebook and Instagram that consistently tells the story of the market and grows followers to 20k+ pre-opening.  

  • Design a range of flyers, posters, banners, etc. using established Market Brand Guide.

  • Regularly update and refresh the Salt City Market’s website

  • Build 8-10 single-page websites (Squarespace or similar) for market tenants (Food Merchants)

  • Identify and cultivate new partner relationships for marketing purposes

  • Provide Technical Assistance (TA) to 8-10 Food Merchants in the design of marketing collateral and logos

  • Identify / liaise with area artists for signage (design and fabrication) for market stalls

  • Write / proof / edit press releases, e-blasts and similar public-facing correspondence

 

DUTIES FOR THE ALLYN FAMILY FOUNDATION                                           
  • Work with Allyn Family Foundation staff to design a series of marketing materials highlighting the work of the Foundation throughout the year.

  • Design a range of materials including annual reports, powerpoint presentations, and program briefs that can be shared with the AFF Board of Directors and close partners.

  • Oversee a weekly social media stream across Facebook and Instagram that consistently tells the story of the AFF and its grantees.  

  • Write / proof / edit press releases, e-blasts and similar public-facing correspondence

  • Regularly update and refresh the Allyn Family Foundation website

  • Design sponsorship ads and programs for the AFF.

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent) in communications design, graphic design, public relations, communications, marketing or related field

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among multiple, competing projects

  • Detail oriented

  • Deadline oriented

 

  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite – Particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign

  • Fluency in social media platforms including a working understanding of analytics

  • Cursory experience in website development, particularly within Squarespace or similar CMS

  • Familiarity with the particular needs, desires, interests, concerns, pain points and barriers to communication that come into play with the diverse communities that call Syracuse home. 

  • Interest in food and foodways a plus; commitment to culture, agency, inclusivity a must.

 

A strong preference will be given to candidates who express interest in or have experience in event production.

  • Position start date is ASAP.

  • The position will be based out of the Allyn Family Foundation office at 450 S. Salina Street, Syracuse NY 13202

  • The position is full time with benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

  • The Marketing and Communications Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Community Prosperity at the Allyn Family Foundation

  • The Marketing and Communications Coordinator will likely manage one or more interns on a regular basis
